On one of her many inter-dimensional walks, Bread found a door.
It wasn't attached to anything she recognized. It sat at the edge of a path she had walked a hundred times before, in a spot she was certain had always been empty. But there it was, a worn wooden door with warm golden light shining from the cracks of the door.
Bread decided to open the door and see what was on the other side.
Inside was a bakery. Unnamed, unlocked, and entirely empty, but somehow already alive. The ovens were warm. The shelves were stocked. And tucked into the back wall was another door. After opening it, there was another world entirely. She closed it and opened it again thinking she was dreaming but again a different world view. Then another. Then another.
The bakery, Bread realized, sat at the center of everything. A quiet bakery connected to every universe, accessible to anyone who stumbled across the right path on the right morning. All it needed was someone to run it.
Bread already knew how to make biscuits. She already knew how to become a loaf. So she stayed and decided to become the head baker and call the place: "Bread's Bakery".
It was not as easy as she thought.
The ovens had opinions. The recipes didn't always work the way they should have. Visitors came through doors she hadn't noticed yet, from places she didn't have words for, wanting things she didn't know how to make. She burned batches. She started over. She learned slowly, the way you only learn things that actually matter.
But she kept going, because she believed that everyone, no matter which universe they wandered in from, deserved to sit down, take a bite of something made with care, and remember to treat themselves well.
That's what the bakery is for.
The bakery is open. The smell will find you when you're ready, and Bread's pastries much just find you inside an envelope.
